• "crash mode"

Pro Fred Wright's (Bahrain Victorious) DI2 went into "crash mode" on its
own during the Roubaix last sunday

    https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/fred-wright-overcomes-shimano-di2-crash-mode-avoids-late-wrong-turn-to-grab-paris-roubaix-top-10/

" "My bike went into crash mode on Arenberg, which is probably the worst
thing that could happen," he added, which is to say that his Shimano Di2 electronic gearing basically mistook the harsh cobbles for a crash,
    locking him in gear."

He recovered and went on to finish 9th, managing to win the sprint from
a group of 7 he was with, but not without a little help:

"The two guys on the front, two idiots, they didn't realise you had to
turn right into the velodrome, and they just went off left and that was
them out of the picture," he said. "There were five of us, and I was
like 'oh, all right, nice. That's a bit easier to get a top 10'.

That's never, ever happened with my friction shifters! ;-)

I suspect that Mr. Andrew has never had the problem with his "Fixi"
    either :-)

I suspect that both folks bikes would have their problems certainly at the speeds the racers hit the Forrest! Sounds like it was temporary glitch if poorly timed!

Wait.... The shifter locks up? Maybe I'm naive, but I don't see any
reason for having the shifter lock up because it thinks you crashed.

    Maybe someone will enlighten me?

It’s so it doesn’t harm its self, I believe I guess like “safe mode” some
car engine will run in if they have a fault.

I guess with mechanical systems you’d be able to tell and not shift if something was in the way, vs Electronics it could force something, which
    could harm the rear mech.

Always works. That's the best part of a simple machine; no
mechanic time save the occasional tire change and an annual
    chain.

Yeah, but you get plenty of greasy finger time on other people's bike.
The rest of us have only our own bike(s) to work on.

Actually, for those who care, I usually wear gloves when I'm working
    on the bike.

There is a beautiful elegant simplicity to a fixed gear bike. I love mine.
